Hatch Behind Bars

capt.fa70b31458414b75a0d4236e08a34e46.survivor_taxes_ny107.jpg
Remember this Richard Hatch guy from Surivor? Well, today he was sentenced to 51 months in an Oklahoma jail. Apparently, my man Rich did not want to pay the taxes on the million he won prancing through the jungle with no clothes on. I think the man is a bit of head case though, because I once saw him on an episode of Dr. Phil, featuring him and his ‘life-partner’, and their adopted son. Needless to say, the son had a few problems of his own, and was getting involved in online and telephone relationships with grown men. It was one of those ‘my son is trying to have sex with grown men he meets online episodes. Now that Richard is going away to jail, the poor kid won’t have a strong male role model in the house to look up to. Oh wait, he still has his other dad.

Phish Spotting

Cactus_Creek.jpg
I was at the B.L.U.E.S. bar last night with a few friends of mine, enjoying a few beers and some music, when who should happen to appear down the bar from us, but legendary(to me) bass player, Mike Gordan, from Phish. Mike was in town playing a show with Trey, the guitar player from Phish, at Northerly Island. Seeing as how my friends and I were all once big time 'Phisheads', we were definitely pretty star struck. After saying hello, Mike ended up sharing a table with us, bringing along with him his posse of women. For a rock star, I have to say, the crop was not up to snuff. But maybe that's his thing…he is known for being weird. We bought Mike a couple shots, and he did them with us, but beyond that, he had other goals in mind. Regardless, it was pretty amazing for us to be there partying with a member of one of our all time favorite bands. Don't worry, he didn't ask any of us to take a ride down to the boathouse on his Segway Scooter. More about it Saturday!

Breaking News...

From Entertainment Tonight's website:

Baby Suri Spotted!

July 18, 2006

While the world continues to anxiously await a glimpse of SURI, TOM CRUISE and KATIE HOLMES's 3-month-old baby, US Weekly reports that at least one person has had the pleasure of gazing upon the Hollywood golden child.

According to the latest issue of the magazine, on stands Friday, the couple's good friend, "King of Queens" star LEAH REMINI, says she actually met the young tyke several weeks ago.

"She's a newborn and normal size!" Leah tells US Weekly. Another pal is quoted as saying that Suri is "a cross between the two -- [with] dark, straight hair and dark eyes."

Spotted by another celebrity scientologist. Leah Remini was on Saved by the Bell long before King Of Queens. She played Zack Morris' girlfriend for the summer while the entire cast got jobs at the beach. Then the bitch dumped him. Luckily, it led him back to Kelly.

A Bittersweet Victory for the AL-and Matt

d8iq9vd09.jpg
I was incredibly excited to watch the All-Star game last night, so excited that I accidentally decided to throw some cash down on the outcome. I’m not sure where my new love of sports gambling germinated, although I’m pretty sure it may coincide with the trip Brendan and I made to Las Vegas in early June. After a solid few days of the tables really clearing us out (we had to eat at McDonalds on our last day), the sports book was the only gambling institution that showed me any love. I bet on the Chicago Rush to win the Arena bowl, and sure enough, they turned my 20-dollar bet into a 20-dollar gain. What a feeling-winning 20 bucks while watching a game. It was probably that moment I was hooked. Lately, I have been betting online at bodog.com, without a loss to record to my name. That was until last night. I took the AL to cover the spread, meaning they had to win by at least two runs, which of course, they didn’t. They only won by one. Although I burnt 20 bucks on the game, it is bittersweet, because the White Sox will once again have home field advantage in this year’s World Series. No, I have not misspoken.

Love me some corn...

mattcorn.jpg
I made it to the taste this year, something I say I'm going to do every year, but somehow it always seems to pass me by. I suppose when you have lived here all your life, you end up having a pretty good read on just what the 'Taste of Chicago' is. Regardless, it seems like something every Chicagoan should do, oh, say, once every 5 years. At least that’s the pacing I’m on. While at the taste, I try to at least sample something new, as opposed to the usual Italian Beef, Chicago Style Hot Dog, Deep Dish Pizza, or one of a number of delicious Asian dishes. However, the Alligator on a stick, or Shark, or whatever is skewered at the time, is still a little exotic for my taste buds. I’d say the farthest I ventured this year from my love of bland foods was to a Pork Stuffed Banana Dumpling. I found it be quite good. All in all, I was really glad I made it this year, and the newly acquired freedom to enjoy a cold beer on a hot summer day, really made the whole thing a lot easier. Here I am pictured enjoying some delicious Celtic Corn on the Cobb. That’s an ear of corn, dipped in a vat of butter, and then heavily salted. Right up my alley.

Come Say Hi

All-Star Break

I'm watching the Home Run Derby right now. My hope is that Lance Berkman doesn't advance. He is one of my most hated baseball players, not only because he plays for the Astros and often crushes the Cubs, but because, frankly, he seems like a prick. You might think that since I'm a die-hard Cub fan, I'd be rooting for Jermaine Dye to fail. Fact is, I like Jermaine Dye. He might just be my favorite player on the Sox. I just respect the way he plays and the way he carries himself. I wouldn't mind if he won this contest tonight.
I saw that Keith Richards is ready to tour again after his coconut-related mishap. I was disappointed when the tour got delayed because my favorite band of all time, Guns N' Roses, was scheduled to open for the Stones at a couple of European destinations. Not that I was gonna fly out there, but it'd be nice to get Axl on a big stage during one of his brief stretches of sanity. I hope he follows through on his promise that Chinese Democracy, his long-awaited album, will come out later this year. This isn't the first time he's set a release date, but for some reason I believe it this time. Of course, that might just be the Cub fan optimism in me. (By the way, the Cubs are only 14.5 games out.)
Well, Jermaine Dye is looking solid, while A.J Pierzynski does commentary. A.J. actually seems fairly personable, so I'd better go and find the mute button before I start respecting him as well.

The Man, The Myth

Welcome to Brendan's Corner. Here, Brendan has the capability to fill us in on his innermost thoughts and feelings. So sit back, and hold on tight, it should be interesting.

Fergie Pants

fergie_1.jpg

Here is "Fergie" from the Black Eyed Peas with the soiled pants I mentioned this past Monday. Just wanted to prove that I wasn't making something like this up. I guess she just had her humps, her lady lumps, shaking so much, she lost control. Hopefully Will I Am, or any of the other talented members of the BEP, didn't slip on stage.

Heard on the show Monday, July 3rd.

Here is what we spun this past Monday.

Lupe Fiasco- Kick Push
Chicago- Saturday in the Park
Son Seals- Call My Boss
The Who- The Kids Are Alright

If you liked any of it, it is all available in the iTunes music store!

How bout them Sox?

familysmall.jpg

I hope you enjoyed your Holiday weekend, and didn't lose your face due to difficulties with explosives. The Dahl clan enjoyed the fireworks spectacular last night from atop the Prudential Building, and we were all immensely impressed at the show the city put on. It seems to get better every year. Today, (the real 4th of July), Mike Dahl and I had the pleasure of witnessing the 13-0 victory over the Orioles that our Sox put together. Nothing like enjoying a hot dog and a beer at the ball game, while wearing my Uncle Sam costume, to really make one proud to be an American. Okay, so I don't have the costume, but there were sweet Revolutionary War reenactors on hand, and their costumes sufficed. Mike and I agreed we are going to try and get in on that gig, that way we can march on the field next July 4th.
