MTV VMA Pre-Parties

The MTV Video Music Awards are this Thursday in New York. The Matt Dahl Show is sure to have all the exciting backstage details on Saturday. Here's a taste of what the pre-VMA parties had going on:

Jessica Simpson held a roller- skating party at Roxy on Tuesday. Oksana Baiul, Slim Thug and Shannon Elizabeth were in attendance.

Diddy had parties Monday and Tuesday. Monday was at a club called TenJune. Beyonce, Kanye West, Timbaland and Rod Stewart were there.

On Tuesday, Diddy hosted at Bungalow 8. Kelis and Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame made it out.

Kanye hosted his own party in conjunction with The Roots at One on Tuesday. Retired NBA star Reggie Miller, Lance Bass, The Black Eyed Peas, Venus Williams and Shannon Elizabeth(again) did show.

For the record, I've never had anyone from 2 Live Crew show up at one of my parties. Hopefully someday.

Gimme the fix, Fox

I like getting my Simpsons fix on Fox 32 most weeknights at 10. Problem is, of late, that they only rotate about 20 episodes. They stopped showing all the classic episodes from back in the day. I like the new ones, too, but I don't need to see them twice a month. This may seem like a really stupid thing to complain about. But I'm not the only Simpson's geek to notice. My buddy Jim Ruffatto, who works with me, noticed the same disturbing trend. And I know there's a ton of other Simpsons fans who have probably noticed. Hell, "The Simpsons" consistently beats out at least one of the local news broadcasts in the ratings. I realize Fox would rather sell the DVDs from the earlier seasons than give the entertainment away for free. But it doesn't hurt to whet the appetite of the consumer every once in a while. A generation grew up on daily Simpsons reruns-it solidified the popularity of the show. It wouldn't kill Fox to show them all.

Some Real Resevoir Dogs

Many thanks to Michael Madsen and David Carradine for stopping by the show today. Neither of them decided to go Kung Fu on my ass, so things must have gone well.

Shaun Gayle

Here's Mike and I with Bear's Super Bowl Champ, Shaun Gayle. I felt like an idiot capturing this moment with a camera phone, but it's the best we could do.

Dude...Where's My Camera?

mattandstiffler.jpg

Check out Seann William Scott and I, or Stiffler as many know him, at the Bear's game last night. Almost everyone who bothered the poor guy for a picture or autograph refrered to him as Stiffler, which I'm sure has to get pretty old. I kept it cool and called him Seann. I made sure to really pronounce that second 'N', too. He couldn't have been a nicer guy. Thanks to Mike Dahl for sacrificing his own photo opportunity for the sake of his little brother's website. What a guy.

Ahoy there Matey

I have been spending some time at our family’s lake house in Michigan, and as a result, I have developed quite an affinity for boating and anything maritime culture. I suppose I have always had this love for the water, but over the last couple of weeks, it has really developed into something. I mean today I found myself on the Internet watching videos of creepy seamen tying various nautical knots. Although this does seem a bit bizarre, I can now tie an ‘anchorbend’ or a ‘sheepshank’ with the best of them.

There is kind of a cool community in the boating world as well, and boaters treat their fellow boaters as though they were long time friends. Just the other day a man approached me while docking our boat, and after marveling at my Grade A parking job, he proceeded to tell me repeatedly that I had “a beautiful boat there. I pretended like it was mine, and said “Thanks. He hung around for a bit too long though, and I started to doubt his intentions. But for the most part, the boating community is nothing but positive. I even love the unwritten rule of waving at every other passing boat. It’s kind of like a “Hey, I have a boat too, that makes us pretty sweet kind of thing. I’m sure my Dad, being the control freak that he is, does not want me tooling around Lake Michigan on his craft as though it were my own, but I feel I am learning a great deal about the vessel, and can now take my Dad out for voyages, so he can relax without the stress of tending to the boat. At least that’s how I pitch it to him.

I have to run now though, because I must get to the local boating supply store to pick myself up one of those cool Captain’s Hats before it closes. I bought the boating shoes yesterday. whiteskipperhat-375.jpg

A couple extra shows...

We have been asked to fill in for a couple Stan and Terry Shows next week. You can catch “Slippin’ Into Lightness August 22 and 24, 9am to 1pm. Big thanks to S&T for letting us keep their seats warm. Of course, we’ll be on at our usual time as well, every Saturday morning, 6-10am. Hope you can tune in!

Say it isn't so...

At the risk of becoming a one-dimensional blog, I've got another rap music posting. But it's only because one of my all-time favorites is in the news:

Yes, Lil' Wayne's been arrested on drug charges. I hope you were sitting down.

I've been a big fan of Lil' Wayne's for several years, and he's finally getting the recognition he deserves of late. This arrest shouldn't hold him back. One of the advantages of a career in hip-hop is that being arrested is a positive thing for your future.

I recently read that Lil' Wayne was taking classes online to get his college degree. When asked why, Lil' Wayne gave a response that I try to quote whenever possible:

"I never wanna die without learnin' shit."- Lil' Wayne (circa 2006)

Maybe this drug arrest will be a lesson. But I certainly hope not.

I promise my next blog will be about a completely different topic: R&B(just kidding)

Summer in the City

Drop1_Jack_011.jpg
It has been a while since my last update here, not because I have been neglecting the website, but because I have been so busy enjoying the summer here in Chicago, that I have barely had a minute to sit down and type. Last weekend I attended the Lollapalooza music festival in our own Grant Park, and spent three straight days standing, sweating, drinking, and listening to some truly amazing music. I think it’s great that Lollapalooza has decided to make its home here; it allows me to do an entire summer of seeing bands play in the confines of three days. Also, for a kid with the ADD like me, the festival scene couldn’t work more perfectly. The longest a band plays is for an hour (I tend to get a little restless after anything more than that), there is always a nearby stimulus to pay attention to, and if you get bored with something, just walk around and you’re sure to find entertainment. The people watching is great. All in all, the whole thing was set up incredibly intelligently, and the festival functioned tremendously as a whole. Nothing can beat watching a Wilco or Flaming Lips show as the sun is setting over the skyline. Well that’s not exactly true; a lot of things could probably beat that, like say winning the lotto or something. But for the place and time, it truly was perfect. Summer in Chicago is simply unparalleled. We’ll talk more Saturday at 6am.

Big Month

Time for another addition to Brendan's Corner. I was speaking with a lovely young lady at a party recently who visits mattdahl.com often. She remarked on the infrequent nature of Brendan's Corner. She was damn right. My neglect doesn't stem from a lack of caring. I do appreciate Matt setting up this space for me to blog. It's just that I'm an inexperienced blogger. I'm getting my feet wet, hopefully soon I'll be a regular blogger. Because I feel that when I do blog, I blog with gusto.

Now to the point of my blog: A big month for rap music. For those of you still reading after the last sentence, thank you. I'm excited about 3 albums in particular this August. One is Lupe Fiasco, whose single, "Kick Push", Matt and I have featured several times on the show. The next is Outkast, who will hopefully once again assert their dominance over the world. They have a major-release movie coming out in conjunction with the album, which should be cool. The third is Obie Trice's sophomore effort. Obie is a talented rapper who was recently shot in the head while driving on the highway in Detroit. I liked his first album, Cheers, and look forward to hearing this one. Especially if he has a song describing what it's like to get shot in the head.
I'll try and update this blog with the release dates for anyone that cares.
